In decreasing levels of competence: Acoustic Guitar, Harmonica, Banjo (I was given this for my birthday, in case it was setting off your "country hick" radar, but it's great fun) Violin and Keyboard. -The last book I read is "Cat's Cradle", by Vonnegut. Before that I read "For Whom The Tolls", by Ernest Hemingway. And before that I read "Biker Tats, Piercings, and Automatic Weapons", by Hernandez 'The Snake' De Sota. Actually, I made that last one up, but the list was looking a bit pretentious otherwise. -In terms of exercise, I surf and play squash. Unsurprisingly (based on this list), I am white. Surprisingly, (based on the same list), I am not a total bro. -I like Economics. This fact has the unusual property that it gets you funny looks in both polite society AND cool society, but so it goes - it's what I do, and I think it's important to enjoy what you do. -My favorite politician is Winston Churchill. He was a hard man, and easily one of the wittiest men of the 20th Century. He's also (along with FDR) part of the reason I don't speak Japanese. -As it turns out, I do speak some Japanese, having learned it for a few years in high (Demo, chotto hanashimasu!) -My favorite book is Heart of Darkness by Conrad. -My favorite poet is Kipling, edging out the two Lords (Tennyson and Byron). -I like Tea, particularly Breakfast and Assam (One of those British Empire things). -I once knew how to change a tire on a car but can't vouch that I still do. I can however vouch that I have roadside assistance membership, and (on a good day) the ability to entertain you with witty bon mots while we wait for them to arrive. -I know how to haggle in third world markets, should we randomly find ourselves in one (I learned the hard way in India) And much more besides! So here's the deal. I'm from LA, and will be in town on Thursday and Friday night, as I've got a talk at the university. I've got dinners organized in the early evening both nights, but otherwise I'm at a loose end. I'd love to hang out with someone fun.
